It has a slowly earned reputation as an arts and culture hot spot along the west coast, earning a place next to its more popular progressive brethren in San Francisco, Seattle. and Vancouver, BC. Portland is also earning a reputation as one of the most environmentally friendly, or "green" cities in the US. Oregon is also known for its extensive variety and density of microbreweries.
