The world-renowned St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra opened its 15-city tour of the United States of America at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California as part of the LA Phil’s 2010/11 Visiting Orchestras series. In the spotlight were works by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Johannes Brahms, and Dmitri Shostakovich which featured the artistry of cellist Alisa Weilerstein.

Under the baton of its multiple award-winning Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Yuri Temirkanov, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra displayed their abilities to think below the obvious surface of the three works that were presented on tonight’s program. Yuri Temirkanov’s distinctive presence, insights, and in-depth knowledge of the works were on clear display as he gracefully and seamlessly conducted each musician’s part. In turn, the virtuosi performed with the appropriate passion as they responded to his expressive and convincing conducting technique.

The program opened with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival, Op. 36

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival was amazing. Its bold harmonies and blazing sonorities sparked the audience to begin applauding after the first movement! The music in the overture is derived from the Russian Orthodox liturgy and is based upon a collection of old Russian Orthodox liturgical chants called the Obikhod. (Glass, 2011).
