A journey of a thousand miles began with just one step as the young singer, Jess Yallup, entered the Idols audition room. After the judges heard Jessie’s rendition of “What’s Going On” by Four Non Blondes, it seemed like Idols definitely had a strong contender in the midst.
Jess made every elimination, securing her a place in the top ten and walking one step closer to her dream. South African Idols is currently at the top nine stage, with the finale on the second of November 2010. Jess Yallup agreed to do an exclusive interview with Suite101:
Reaching the top 100 is an accomplishment of its own. How did you feel when you reached the top 10 of Idols?
“Making the top 10 was something I'd always envisioned and hoped for, but part of me never expected to have gone this far- just because I take things one step at a time. It's as if I walked a distance with my eyes on the ground and just looked up and looked back at the horizon - only to see how far I've journeyed; quite a remarkable sensation when past hurdles and uphill’s seem small and distant.”
Many people have described you as a rock singer. Do you consider yourself versatile or do you prefer the rock genre?
“I consider myself very versatile, while still being distinctly Jess. I have roots in and have tested myself in all fields and genres - I studied Classical Singing at School then Jazz at university. I was part of a corporate duo band, then gigged solo doing acoustic gentler folk pop. I currently play in a band and we experiment with different styles of rock and pop. I have worked in theatres, done musical theatre.
Rock isn't the best term for me - I would definitely describe myself as alternative - a soft rocker. I love everything from Mozart to Loreena McKennit. I have a gentler side that people will get to see soon and I love all forms of music.” Jess laughs as she states that, “I am not the type to do the whole sex-sells Kylie Minogue tight-dress and pout type thing - it just isn't me.”
Who have been your musical influences?
“I have a vast number of influences. There are several parts of me- the singing part of me, the performing part of me and the songwriting part of me. Each part of me has been influenced by so much. Having worked singing covers in bars and on stages for so long - certain styles and seasons start to stick. I am a hybrid of so many - some of which I'm probably not aware of.
